Hey! Welcome to yet another edition of the Weekend Update blog.

In this issue we comment the lack of opposition in Argentina, which might cause that the Peronists may remain in office for a long time, and believe me, argentineans don't want it to happen. Time for shaking!

In Italy Mr. Prodi strikes again, this time against France. Hasn't he learned who's in charge in Europe? That's a dude that was sleeping during his years on the European Commission.

Spain's minister of Industry José Montilla has been caught off balance. He favored Gas Natural in an impossible PAO against a company four times bigger, and then the German E.ON came in. Now that everybody in Spain is fighting to keep things in the country, Montilla has modified all by himself a decision taken by the Minister's assembly. Did he had permission from Zapatero? Nobody knows yet, but this settles corruption to an all-new limit.

Later today: Bush visits India, the weekly movie critic by JL. Panero, and the sports on Monday.

Gentlemen, we've got a deal. India will develop its nuclear power production for civilian uses, and America will provide what the Post calls "know how". This comes in a time when the Asia-Pacific region is at a turning point, and must decide to develop clean industry and go forward or stagnate and become an appendix.

In this context, we should celebrate that tensions with neighboring Pakistan are at an all-time low point. This, of course, favors economic growth in both countries and so the consequent demand of a clean power, in accordance to Kyoto's agreements.

The temptations of developing nuclear power is, of course, of using uranium to make nuclear bombs. The fears of the Bush Administration are then justified, specially considering the recent history between India and Pakistan. Bush has raised an easy speech, like anytime: develop your nuclear plants, but let the International Community have a look on them.

Main fears arise when it comes to speak about the Non-Proliferation treaty, yet unsigned by neither India or Pakistan. A treaty that none of them is ready to ratify yet.

But this is nonetheless a step forward: from an abscence of a treaty, we've got a first agreement, and for those of you in close with Business world, that means that more profound talks will take place sooner or later.

This "trip" from President Bush comes handy. Asia is changing, and countries like India, Pakistan, China, Taiwan, South Korea or Japan are going to be huge, much more than know. They're taking over and we better be in good terms with everyone, back there.

EL MUNDO Volvemos a la época dorada

Parece ayer cuando Felipe González cesaba ministros para no salpicarse de sus casos de corrupción. Solchaga, Narcís Serra -nunca Eduardo-, y la lista sigue... Claro, esta nueva generación socialista no podía ser menos y amén de una incompetencia demostrada, ha tenido que ser el charnego el que denote tener las dotes más desarrolladas para esto de la prevaricación y el robo.

Sobre todo porque hasta ahora ningún ministro había corrido los riesgos que ha corrido este. Cobrar 100 millones, por desgracia, ya no sorprende, pero sí retrasarla publicación un BOE hasta el Martes para "autoenmendar" una ley. Desde luego, si este hecho se revela cierto, D. Pedro J. está arriesgando aquí el pellejo, porque ha pillado a un Ministro haciendo lo nunca visto.

Y no. No va a dimitir.

No lo hará porque ya no hay vergüenza entre estos políticos, estos analfabetos integrales que componen el gobierno, "rojos" de solemnidad -pero de escasa profundidad intelectual-, cuya máxima aspiración fue una portada de Vogue... No. Montilla, con su 100 millones, no es distinto de los demás. Es uno de muchos, que no ha sabido ser discreto. Y tarde o temprano terminarán saliendo a la luz todos los casos. Y no irán más allá porque, en el caso de que salgan, estará el señor Bacigalupo para exonerarlos.

No va a dimitir porque la corrupción que 13 años de socialismo instalaron en España ha llegado ya hasta el tuétano del asunto. Cuando el propio presidente Tribunal Supremo se niega a comparecer ante el Congreso de los Diputados, erguido en Comisión McArthy, alegando la ingerencia del legislativo, nos damos cuenta de que ni separación ni leches, de que si este gobierno lo puede controlar todo lo hará. Y todo ello con la vista puesta hacia la impunidad de sus miembros.

LA NACIÓN ¿Oposición?

No me vayan a decir que esto es una oposición a un gobierno patético como el de Kischner. ¡Es increíble!

Desde luego, si esta es la alternativa al PJ, los peronistas -"peronchos", como bien dice un amigo- tienen la casa rosada para rato. Es decir que tienen tiempo de sobra para terminar lo que empezaron: reconvertirla en un motel de carretera.

Y es que no se puede dar crédito que los políticos sean tan estúpidos. ¿Aguantar dos horas a K hablando? Ustedes sí que son gallegos, porque es que no he visto tontería semejante desde la rendición francesa en la última guerra mundial. Si yo hubiera estado allí, me hubiera encerrado en el baño (con La Nación, porqué no), con tal de no oir las sandeces que este presidente de quinta categoría tenía que decir.

Lo mejor es que encima se quejan de "maltrato", pooobrecitos. Ea, ea, ea. Ya se fue el presi malo. Lo que tenían que haber hecho es responder, ¡cobardes! Es decir, que primero caen en la trampa ¿y luego se quejan? Háganme un favor y tengan un poco de agallas para decirle sus verdades a Kischner, que tampoco es mucho pedir, y total la tienen fácil...

Es lo que provoca no estar en el gobierno: inseguridad. A ver si hay suerte y sacan de tripas corazón, porque entonces vamos a tener una democracia en serio: un gobierno criticado por lo malo de su gestión y unos partidos fuera del poder sin mucho que perder. Porque aquí se ha perdido algo importante, y es la dignidad.

CORRIERE Non ha capito nulla

Quanti anni spesi nella Commissione Europea e quanti anni che poteva essere rimasto a casa... Il predecessore di Durao Barroso nel principale organo dell'Unione Europea sembra non aver capito propio nulla di quanto ne succede di là. Nè come funziona, nè come si negozia.

Don Romano Prodi -il Don è per un'usanza spagnola, non pensate male- non è neanche al governo che già si mette a lanciare ultimatum contro uno dei due giganti europei, con un'uomo pericoloso com'è Chirac quando questo è ancora président... O Prodi è matto, o ha un' idea diversa di cos'è la Francia. Certo che lui nella Commissione ha conosciuto governetti deboli: I socialisti, poi Raffarin... che erano nei confronti della Germania di Schroder? Ancor' oggi non potremmo parlare di una relazione fra "uguali" in Europa, anche se entrambi paesi sono il chiaro motore europeo.

Ma venire a seccare uno di questi quando, specialmente lui, non è neanche a Palazzo Chigi, e essere propio sbadato, o molto, anzi troppo, sicuro di sè stesso. Forse e insistiamo, sbagliatamente, Prodi pensa ancora di avere l'influenza dei suoi anni come Comissario. E invece no! Quest'uomo non è, per esempio, lo spagnolo Marcelino Oreja, che gestisce una delle grandi ditte di construzione in Spagna. Il professore appena può gestire il propio abbigliamento, con l'accordo forse tacito, forse nò, della propia moglie. Niente di più. Provate a chiedere a Bruxelles chi corno è Prodi e vi risponderanno con certezza "Un' italiano, no?". Forse i tecnocrati sapranno essere più precisi, ma non ho l'impressione che lo si tenga specialmente a meno.

L'uomo che propose "facciamo la vista lunga sul deficit tedesco e francese", ora si tiene per il super-patriota italiano. Un feeling piuttosto di moda nella sinistra, propio quando ci dobbiamo ricordare che, spesso, il patriotismo è un rifugio per le canaglie.

Howdy and welcome!

This week, and sorry for being so short-minded, we're going to be really schematical about three issues: the Italian elections, the aquisition quest for a spanish electric company and a tiny reflection about the Army's role in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

IF we're lucky we should also be getting a sports collumn by Chema.

Pasos definitivos de Real Madrid y Barcelona

Este fin de semana se puede calificar, sin riesgo a equivocarse, como el que marcará el devenir del resto de la temporada.

Después de la victoria del Barça en Zaragoza (con polémica actitud de la grada en la Romareda incluida), ni el Valencia, ni el propio Madrid podían fallar si pretendían mantener el pulso por la Liga vigente.

El primer tropiezo se consumó con el empate del Valencia en su propio campo contra el Getafe.

Ante este panorama, el conjunto madridista se encontraba con una oportunidad única para hacerse con el segundo puesto y retomar mínimamente el duelo a dos ya mítico de la Liga Española. Un Mallorca en plena fase de reconstrucción no debía ser rival para un equipo que aspira siempre a todo. Pues bien, el resultado, como de costumbre, fue muy distinto al que la lógica debería ofrecernos.

Con los resultados de Barcelona y Valencia el conjunto de López Caro sólo podía salir a darlo todo a Son Moix y así olvidar el varapalo del Arsenal en el Bernabéu.

Sin embargo, el equipo salió apático, sin ganas de jugar. El juego lento, la falta de movilidad, sin apoyos entre compañeros, las distancias kilométricas entre líneas, etc... en fin lo de siempre, se apoderaron de nuevo de los blancos, pero esta vez con un punto más de pasotismo. La tromba de agua que cayó sobre el estadio mallorquinista parecía presagiar las lágrimas que a más de un madridista derramaría por la lamentable imagen que su equipo ofrece últimamente allá por donde vaya.

Sólo un jugador blanco dio medianamente la cara: Sergio Ramos, autor del gol que adelantó al Madrid en el marcador (él, Casillas y Robinho deben ser la base del nuevo Madrid). Demasiada recompensa.

El mismo guión en la segunda parte, en la que el técnico madridista recurrió al carácter de Raúl. Pero el máximo goleador de la historia de la selección española ya no es ni la sombra de lo que fue, y sólo con carácter tampoco se adelanta nada.

En fin, 2-1 al final del partido y PASO DEFINITIVO del Real Madrid, hacia la hecatombe.

El Barcelona, por su parte también sigue a lo suyo, pero directo a conseguir la Liga y a ver quién es capaz de "toserle" este año en la tan ansiada Champions League

Parece que el fin de un ciclo se acerca, con dos años de retraso, eso sí. Son los últimos pasos de un grupo de jugadores que ha dado tantas alegrías como desgracias al madridismo. Si el tan endiosado Florentino Pérez hubiese sabido medir los tiempos podría haber dejado un gran recuerdo de los Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, etc, mientras que con su empeño de forzar la máquina el recuerdo que quedará es el de un grupo triste de veteranos que se arrastraban por todos ls campos de España y Europa y que ridiculizó todo aquello por lo que tanto luchó don SANTIAGO BERNABÉU.

W. POST. Doing the wrong thing with the army

After two conflicts and consequent occupation, the Pentagon should be realizing that, at this point, a country the size of Texas can't be controlled by some "weekend soldiers" like the reservists, but by either a professional force or a well-trained local police force. Two ingredients missing both in Afghanistan or Iraq to pacify the zone.

Some may argue, and rightly so, that if we're complaining now about the budget, keeping an army made of 100% pros is just not affordable. It would eat up the GOP and we would end like the Soviets, at the end of the USSR, with a virtual bankruptcy. No, I'm not talking about keeping a huge war machinery, but instead an army big enough to face its missions successfully, and still worth enough to be financed.

It's not an impossible goal: the Israelis have quite an experience about it, mainly because it's their last line of defense against terrorism. It's an army of conscripts that spend quite some time in training and have capable commanders. For the U.S Army, I guess the second thing is achieved, but to have a two-bit farmer set loose in Iraq would only end like Abu Ghraib did. Soldiers need to be taught discipline not only towards their superiors, but to the people they're occupying.

Somehow it worked out in Japan and Germany after WW II. Why is it not going so well in the Middle East?

EL MUNDO ¿Querías OPA? Pues toma OPA

Sin duda los alemanes no son todo "sonrisas y bigotes", pero lo que sí saben hacer es negocios. Y que se lo digan a E.ON que, ante la maniobra de prestidigitador de La Caixa-Gas Natural, ha presentado una OPA con todas las de la ley. Esto es seriedad, y no cacicadas.

A estas alturas, lo que se debe pensar es qué conviene más a los accionistas de Endesa, una "cutre-opa" o una seria, o en otras palabras: si los debe absorber una compañía no mucho más grande que Endesa o un gigante energético europeo. Y hay argumentos tanto a favor como en contra de cada uno. En mi humilde opinión, E.ON no es Gazprom, es decir, una compañía carcomida por la corrupción y los intereses políticos. Si bien la alemana tiene un porcentaje de intervención del estado similar, no se puede comparar a una con la otra.

Sobre todo por un argumento que suena a tópico pero es real: en Alemania no hay un "apagón" y en España el problema energético se hace realidad cada verano, cuando el consumo se dispara. ¿Y vamos a resolver este problema creando un "monstruito" del gas de ámbito nacional? Porque ese parece ser el objetivo que gobierno y cada vez más empresas españolas se están fijando. Por mi, lo siento, pero en este asunto no cabe ser un "patriota de hojalata".

Ya no hace falta convencernos. Si el gobierno quiere hacer las cosas mal, las hará mal. Las lealtades de algunos de sus componentes así lo exige, aunque siempre tendremos la duda de si lo que vendieron es Endesa o a todos nosotros.

CORRIERE Con nemici come questi...

Prodi è andato giù per l'ultima volta. La demagogia è quasi, quasi, una questione universale con i movimenti politici di sinistra e il professore non poteva essere meno. E ha pure la faccia tosta di non fare appello al materialismo, praticamente innato in definitiva, in ognuno di noi, bensì all'avidita. Il messaggio e propio chiaro: votami che ti pago. Chiamatelo demagogia oppure semplicemente clientelismo.

E poi l'idea che Prodi ha della demagogia è, diciamo, sfigurata dai fatti. Infatti, per "demagogia" non si intende il promettere e non far nulla, bensì il promettere la luna, indipendentemente se poi la dai o no. Quello che non si dovrebbe fare in politica è propio questo, cioè dire "2.500 euro all'anno" e non pensare nemmeno a di dove li tiri fuori.

Ve lo dico io da dove: da voi. Ancora una volta, si espone un modello economico tremendamente errato, quello delle tasse per finanziare tutto uno stato burocratico, come si sà ch è l'Italia. Ci siamo fermati a pensare quanto dovremmo sudare per quei 2.500 rotti? Neanch'io. Dopo però, ci scandalizzeremo a sentire Fabio Capello parlar bene di Francisco Franco...

Le possibilità di quest'uomo nelle prossime elezioni, non le sò propio. Spero che gli Italiani siano abbastanza intelligenti di ricordare perchè hanno messo alla presidenza del Consiglio Berlusconi, e che questo non vada a male governando. Finora, a giudizio di questo umile giornalista, se la stà cavando bene in un paese com'è lIitalia. Forse gli elettori la vedono come me. O forse no, e allora vi auguro un buon viaggio nell'tunnel.

Politics for a change! (Week 21)

Hi and welcome to yet another edition of the Weekend Update blog. We've returned and this time it's for good.

Let us introduce a special report in this edition. It's an article which source is not the Washington Post, but the Heritage Foundation. Enjoy first the linked article, because it is truly worth it. The matter at hand is the 2006 Martí Prize, from the UN agency UNESCO, given this year to an exemplary man, a democracy lover. Hugo Chávez.

As to Spain, we focus today in the lack of initiative in the government. When you're in charge, you're supposed to do stuff, not expect reaction from terrorists... pathetic.

In Italy, Berlusconi rules, but he doesn't lead the country alone. Among his necessary allies, a very uncomfortable party comes along: the Lega Nord, a sort of authonomist party from the North is yelling again. Will they leave the goverment forcing another election? What they should do is go for good.

Publishing tomorrow (Sunday), a comment about the Argentinean-uruguayan new diplomatic crisis... some people never learn, but when a prick such as Kischer is in charge, better find yourself in higher grounds.

EL MUNDO Lo que nos faltaba por ver

"¿Para qué vivir tranquilo cuando se puede vivir crispado?" La frase es del Gran Wyoming, que amén de ser un progre orgulloso de serlo, de vez en cuando lanza pildoras de sabiduría como esas. Y la verdad que nuestro querido ZP parece aplicar esta máxima al pie de la letra. Con alguna modificación : "para qué tener tranquila a la sociedad española, cuando la puedo tener sin dormir".

Y es que ni un desmentido, ni una ratificación. Desde Moncloa no se hace ninguna señal inequívoca al 100% de que se va a acabar con ETA. Un día el "presi" dice que ve cerca el fin de ETA, y al siguiente el Fiscal General quita años de cárcel al más sanguinario de la pandilla de asesinos. Un día el Ministro de Justicia dice que redobla esfuerzos, y al siguiente Zapatero da plantón a las víctimas del terrorismo.

Es la constante confusión, la que se practica. Se marea la perdiz, a ver si cae muerta, y los medios son muy culpables de este juego, ya que le siguen la corriente.

Y eso que el PSOE tiene medios abiertamente afines. Sin la SER y PRISA, no estaría ZP donde hoy está, pero ¿Y Rajoy? ¿Acaso bastan la COPE y Radio Intereconomía para convencer a la sociedad de que este gobierno lo está haciendo redobladamente mal?

¿La solución? Como diría D. Gabriel Galdón, dejarse de tanto telediario, y empezar a buscar información por nosotros mismos. De lo contrario, estimado lector, corre usted el riesgo de sufrir una intoxicación informativa, que no de gripe aviar. La información sobre este gobierno es informar de nada, y por una desafortunada dinámica, tanto la oposición como los medios tienden a seguirle el juego. Pero yo me pregunto lo que puede durar semejante gobierno si todos le damos la espalda.

SPECIAL REPORT: about "Congratulations, Comrade!"

To come down on UNESCO has lost its old-fashioned taste: it's no news anymore. Remember when the USA pulled out of there, and then returned when Clinton was in office? Well, now they pay for almost the eight part of their budget, but to me that association of gangsters hasn't changed a bit. Liberals might say whatever they like, but please don't believe them!

Mr Gardiner and Mr. Johnson, authors of the linked article, stress the issue in that the José Martí prize does not reflect the visions of the man, but what would you ever expect from a Regime like Castro's? If the Cuban dictator was at the initiative of the prize, the Comandante willl always decide who gets that prize. And who else that his advanced pupil in Latin America?

Plus, consider Mr. Chavez as a Democratic leader and all his propaganda will be a success. A man that can call himself that having passed and election such as the last held in Venezuela surely is insane, or is the biggest phony in the world. In those polls, the opposition counted no more than a participation of 17% of the electorate. Against 70%, a stat from Chavez' agencies, of course. Way to go, Hugo. Way to go.

Coming back to the Prize, I think that Fidel is going to be short of candidates for next year, if Chavez or himself don't win it again. Time will tell, but why not giving it to Bolivian President Evo Morales? Or even better, to North-Korean Pharaoh Kim-Jong-Il. After all, if Chavez is a democratical man, he's at the source of the people's will. hey! He even let North-Koreans eat twice during his birthday! That's not democracy, that's even better, right? Wasn't it a Democratic Republic? Well, now you know that too.

CORRIERE. Maroni, basta di scherzi

La Lega Nord è stato sempre il "partner scomodo" per il Polo.

Berlusconi potrebbe imparare però dai propri errori: l’ eccesso di confidenza. Chi la fà, l’aspetti. E un altro ribaltone sarebbe veramente vergognoso... Sarebbe un’altro Waterloo.

È questo quello che anche Maroni sembra voler dire. Al punto che minaccia con l’abbandono se al referendum viene dato un sì. Lo sò, sarebbe troppo chiedere al Ministro del Welfare essere minimamente serio con le propie proposte, ma il condizionare così un governo di cui si è parte, risulta più comico che eccessivo.

Ancor più surrealista è questo desiderio di creare un “terzo polo” con “le forze autonomiste”. Forse Maroni non stà calcolando molto bene i rischi potenzialmente suicidali di questo nuovo giro nella politica leghista. C’è chi vede in lui un segno d’avvertenza più o meno serio verso Berlusconi, ma c’è chi invece si rende conto che una persona mediocre come Maroni non riuscirà in altro impegno che fare una politica mediocre, di isolamento verso altri partiti, se non si schiera mai con la sinistra.

In Europa, purtroppo, movimenti di questo genere si contano a decine. Nell’ Eurocamera vengono catalogati nel curioso partito “l’Europa delle Regioni”, dove ogni tanto appare un’ ex-terrorista dell’ ETA, un aggitatore del 68, come Cohn-Bendit -“le jeune Cohn”, lo chiamava De Gaulle- e gente di quel tipo di calagna.

Ci si deve chiedere dunque se Maroni vuole stare con quel tipo di gente. Alla Sinistra importa ben poco lo stato federale. Specialmente se non vi si trova un redditto elettorale. Al Polo importa in misura di migliorare la propia gestione... quindi Maroni dovrebbe smetterla con gli scherzi e gestire il propio ministero senza rompere troppo. Modesto consiglio.

EL MUNDO. Puñalada trapera

Que el Fiscal General del Estado es un impresentable lo saben hasta los pingüinos del Polo Sur ; que el que lo nombró, y que es Ministro del Interior, tiene aún más habitos mafiosos que su lacayo, también es sabido. Lo que hasta ahora se nos escapaba es la dimensión más crudamente amoral cuya más evidente manifestación es la vicepresidenta Fernández de la Vega. Sí, sí, la "Iguana"...

Eduardo Fungairiño, ya ex-Fiscal Jefe de la Audiencia Nacional, ha dedicado buena parte de su vida a la justicia, y estos últimos 20 años a la lucha antiterrorista, que ha sido muchas veces el caballo de batalla de los partidos políticos en las elecciones democráticas. Ahora se le recompensa no solo con una "prejubilación forzosa", sino además mintiendo bellacamente sobre la causa de su salida de la fiscalía.

Por supuesto, de los medios de Prisa, lejos de reconocerle su labor pasada, se lo insulta, diciendo que su labor ha sido "polémica". Los redactores Lázaro y Yolti se pueden ir a insultar a las madres de los militares (por ejemplo), o a lo mejor a la "puta España", si son fans de Pepe Rubianes.

Una estrategia del terror, según algunos, para que al tiempo que la dimisión la firma el propio Fungairiño, pero que mantenga aterrorizados a los demás fiscales. Pumpido quiere las cosas claras: o haces lo que te digo, o coges la puerta y te vas. Y no señor, no son formas de licenciar a una persona que tanto ha hecho por España.

Es una tesis a la que me adhiero, por falta de información más que por otra cosa. Una falta de información que ya es recurrente y característica de este gobierno "del talante". Como decía un pariente sevillano, "Llévatelos. Llévatelos a todos, Señor..."

Post. Is it all about money?

This is what I call a busy week for the American news that spread out of the borders. We knew on Monday that the Enron process began. The POST comes up with a poll about confidence of the americans about the economy, which can be indeed a dangerous tool. If 40% of the participants do not believe in business-related affairs, this is bad news for the economy. But, after all, it's a poll.

What happened in Enron, though, is a state of the art deception. Massive and at all levels, the unconvered Enron bankruptcy meant that they were lying to us, to the people -source, in the end, of their wealth-. And that lie didn't came only from the "bigger fishes", but from all levels. In one word, disappointing. Some point up that the healing has begun, but I wouldn't be that optimistic.

Better news were brought the following day with Mr. Greenspan's retirement and the positive vote for Judge Alito. We can congratulate the ousting chairman of the Federal Reserve for two decades of top-notch service. He left proudly, so he deserves recognition for that.

As to the final vote on Alito, we made it! The Bush administration can finally congratulate itself to have put the Republican Party back together -almost- in order to back up one candidate to the Supreme Court. It was, sincerely, no surprise, since Alito was not an anonymous within Republican circles, as it was that Kennedy's democrats voted massively against him.

In the end, we can realize that many matters are at hand. Some good, some not that good, but in the end, this week leaves a good balance after all.

Oh yeah, one shouldn't left business undone like that. But when it comes to exams, believe me, my team and myself are pretty serious about them. After all, consider we're students... well, most of us.

But what worries us is not that. it is Kischner in Argentina, it's Hamas in Palestine, it's the changing moods of the Spanish Premier when it comes to find allies in government... Little by little we realize that this is a crazy world and if we can't help it, we'll be rather nuked by France (who could ever dream about it a decade ago) or Iran (the same applies here).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this rather incomplete 20th edition of the Weekend Update blog. Some of our guys needed a break, and hell, I'm more than happy to say "hi" on my own.

EL PAÍS. Si no te gustan tus amigos... ¡cambialos!

Nada como este gobierno para fomentar el viejo dicho de "año nuevo, vida nueva". Y lo que pasa es que uno no puede tomarse vacaciones, porque te pueden colar un estatuto de por medio. El caso es que Zapatero, que no lee ABC, pero se lo cuentan, ve con horror estar 10 puntos por debajo en una encuesta. No del CIIS, que esas son de chiste, una pleitesía (al gobierno) o pitorresía ( hacia los votantes. Esta encuesta venía cargada con TNT y no añade nada nuevo: las amistades de ZP le cuestan caro.

Tonto no es (del todo), así que el cambio de aliados se impone, y además en un momento delicado: la recta final del Estatuto de Cataluña. Un estatuto en el que, tanto ERC como CIU han pugnado por ser el partido más radical en la carrera por un "estatuto mejor". La estrategia era evidente: pedir la luna "para ver qué nos dan en Madrid". Y Zapatero se la ha jugado a Carod-Rovira. Con los presupuestos para 2006 aprobados, eso sí.

Debe de doler. Puigcercós y Carod-Rovira han sido los "protas" durante todo el proceso. Han llevado su Estatuto a Madrid (no el de Maragall, no pequemos de ingenuos) y ahora Artur Mas se lleva el merito... ¿les parece extraño que amenacen ahora con votar en contra? A mi no.

En cambio, Artur Mas está en su mejor momento. Después de hacer una oposición sucia en Cataluña, después del escándalo del 3% durante la crísis del Carmelo, se hace el "amigo" con tal de tener un estatuto nuevo... y cuando parece que no se va a llegar a un acuerdo, coge a Zapatero por banda y chuta a gol...

Mas, y esto ya lo dijimos aquí, es idiota. Ha echado sus cartas sobre la mesa demasiado pronto, aunque se le veía venir. El estatuto daba igual, pero desgastar a ERC, no. Ese es el objetivo, y a Zapatero le da igual uno que otro, con tal de quedarse afincado en la Moncloa.

Ya veremos, pero me da que ya no le salen las cuentas y que el ocaso zapateríl ya no es más que cuestión de paciencia. Rajoy lo ve, y por eso no da la puntilla... no hace falta.

POST. Trouble ahead in the Middle-East

It’s useless to say now that the Palestinian elections have been disappointing for most of the International Community and that President Bush is firmly against Hamas’ violence towards Israel.

It’s useless to say that Hamas is the leading terrorist group in the Middle-East, financed with Iranian money, and very close in its ideas when it comes to the “soon-to-be-nonexistent” state of Israel.

It’s useless to say that Israel has menaced to cut any funding to the Palestinian authority as long as they do not abandon violence, and considering Hamas’ background, this is rather unlikely to happen.

But even if all odds are against, there’s still room for hope. Not much but still. Why? Because Palestine is not alone, so to say. The European “Troika” has always shown a great interest in the moderation of the precedent government of Al-Fatah. After the Oslo agreements in 1993, Arafat’s party gave up violence. This doesn’t mean Hamas is going to follow the same path. Its origin is quite different, mainly because we’re talking about a religious-based party.

It is not credible, thought, that in the Middle East, a region which is increasing its democratic values election after election, vote after vote, a radical party such as Hamas raises to power, but again, look at Iran’s Amadineyad. We cannot cast a spell and ban radicals from government, but we can press up to soften its pretensions.

With Iran’s retaking of nuclear threats, and a newly-aggressive Palestinian Authority we cannot progress. The problems posed by the Iraqi occupation will be a minor setback if there’s an escalade of terrorism just because “Allah commands it”. We better take the issue seriously on time. Europe is there. America is there too, so let’s check out how Hamas is going to act before proceeding any further.

CORRIERE. Basta aerolinee di bandiera

Anni or sono, la sola idea di creare un’aerolinea non-statale era vista come un’utopia. Le ditte o erano dello stato o non c’era banca al mondo che potesse finanziare gli aeri, servizi, etc...

Poi apparirono le nuove aerolinee di basso costo, como EasyJet. Malgrado qualche esperimento venuto a meno, specialmente in Italia, si sono rivelate un fenomeno grandiosamente solvente, con l’eliminazione di “lussi superflui” come pranzi, l’installazione di cucinette, etc...

E questa settimana, Alitalia ha affrontato un triste momento: ancora un altro sciopero, che ha provocato disagi un pò dappertutto nel nostro paese e le conessioni estere. Quante migliaia di impiegati conta “l’aerolinea di bandiera”?

Purtroppo, quello che serve a identificare una ditta statale da una privata è l’ecesso di personale, che scarsamente viene risolto quando la si privatizza, e sempre coi sindacati in mezzo. Sono i sindacati, non lo stato, quelli che controllano queste ditte. L’utente è sempre alla mercè dei capricci di quattro inutili nostalgici dell’ Unione Sovietica, che altro che voler far funzionare la ditta vogliono la busta paga e lavorare il meno possibili.

Scusate l’eccesso di liberalismo, ma imprese del genere vengono a fallire, come stanno fallendo globalmente. Quando lasci in mano di molti la decisione che si deve prendere dall’alto, tenendo in conto tutte le maledette variabili, ci schiantiamo. È come se i passeggeri pilotassero l’aereo, invece del pilota: di sicuro potrebbero stabilizzare la macchina, ma mai la porteranno a buon porto.

È questo ciò che, sfortunatamente, succede in Alitalia. Invece di prendere le decisioni corrette, cioè licenziare il personale che stà mangiando il budget della ditta inutilmente, e di riconvertire quel personale al settore privato, gli italiani devono mantenerlo, e spesso di sciopero in sciopero, come le Ferrovie dello Stato.

Io mi chiedo quando l’Italia sveglierà da questo protezzionismo Keynesiano... E spero pronto.
